Azul Biotech is recruiting a Process Development Scientist – Downstream Processing for an innovative biotechnology company developing a proprietary manufacturing platform for gene therapy products.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of downstream process development at an important stage of the company's growth. Your scientific judgement, experimental design and technical decisions will directly influence how purification strategies are developed, tested and implemented.
The role
This is a hands-on Scientist position combining laboratory work with experimental design, data analysis and technical planning.
You will lead downstream process-development activities, with a strong focus on chromatography, filtration and purification. You will translate broad technical goals into practical, stepwise experimental plans and help determine which approaches, technologies and equipment should be prioritised.
The exact balance between laboratory and desk-based work will depend on project needs and team experience. We are hiring a Process Development Lab Technician that the scientist should be excited to mentor and train particularly in chromatography, TFF, filtration and experimental execution. Therefore, candidates should be motivated to maintain regular and meaningful involvement in the laboratory.
You will also mentor a Process Development Lab Technician, particularly in chromatography, TFF, filtration and experimental execution.
Alongside this, you will work closely with the hiring manager as a scientific sounding board: exchanging ideas, challenging assumptions and helping turn technical objectives into realistic development plans.
Your responsibilities
- Designing and executing downstream process-development studies.
- Developing and optimising purification workflows involving chromatography, FPLC, TFF, clarification and filtration.
- Translating technical objectives into clear experimental strategies.
- Analysing results, identifying deviations and defining appropriate next steps.
- Reviewing protocols and identifying scientifically weak, outdated or inefficient approaches.
- Evaluating equipment, outsourcing and technology requirements.
- Preparing protocols, reports, presentations and technical documentation.
- Mentoring and supporting a laboratory technician.
- Contributing to continuous improvement across laboratory and process-development activities.
Your background
- MSc or PhD in biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, biochemistry, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences or a related field.
- Relevant industry experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, bioprocessing or another commercial life-science environment.
- Strong hands-on experience in downstream process development.
- Practical experience with chromatography or FPLC.
- Experience with TFF, clarification and filtration.
- Strong experimental-design, data-analysis and troubleshooting skills.
- Professional proficiency in English.
- Willingness to remain actively involved in laboratory work.
Relevant industry experience is a key selection criterion.
Experience with viral vectors, AAV, process characterisation, DoE, scale-up, ELISA, dPCR, LIMS or laboratory automation would be advantageous.

You should also be motivated to share knowledge and help a laboratory technician grow technically.
