The company
Azul Biotech is recruiting a Process Development Lab Technician for a biotechnology company developing an innovative manufacturing platform for gene therapy (AAVs).
The company is working on one of the sector's most important challenges: making the production of complex biological therapies faster, more reproducible and easier to scale.
Its proprietary technology introduces a new approach to biomanufacturing and is progressing from technical development towards broader commercial application. This is an opportunity to join a small, ambitious team at a stage where laboratory execution, technical curiosity and continuous improvement can have a direct impact on the future of the platform.
The role
This is a hands-on position combining established laboratory workflows with downstream process development.
Approximately half of your time will involve executing laboratory production work, while the remaining time will focus on purification and process-development activities, particularly chromatography and filtration.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Executing laboratory and bioprocessing protocols accurately and independently.
- Operating chromatography and other downstream-processing equipment.
- Leading FPLC, tangential flow filtration, clarification and filtration activities.
- Preparing buffers, media, reagents and process materials.
- Monitoring equipment and identifying deviations or abnormal process behaviour.
- Troubleshooting straightforward technical issues.
- Recording experiments and results in an electronic laboratory notebook.
- Reviewing routine analytical data and identifying unexpected results.
- Supporting equipment maintenance, inventory and laboratory organisation.
- Suggesting practical improvements to workflows and processes.
Your background
- BSc or MSc in biotechnology, bioengineering, bioprocess engineering, biochemistry, chemical engineering, life sciences or a related field.
- Relevant experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, bioprocessing or another industrial life-science environment.
- Practical experience with downstream purification technologies.
- Hands-on chromatography or FPLC experience.
- Strong laboratory, documentation and troubleshooting skills.
- Professional proficiency in English.
- A genuine interest in spending most of your working week in the laboratory.
Industry experience in downstream processing techniques, including chromatography (FPLC), tangential flow filtration (TFF) and clarification are important selection criteria.
Experience with ELISA, dPCR, cell culture, fermentation, LIMS, DoE or laboratory automation would be an advantage.
The ideal teammate
We are looking for someone who does more than follow instructions.
You should be curious about why each process step matters, recognise when results or equipment behaviour are unusual and consider possible explanations before escalating an issue.
You should also be comfortable working in a small, fast-moving biotechnology company where priorities and processes may continue to evolve.
What is offered
- A varied role combining routine execution with process development.
- Exposure to advanced chromatography, filtration and bioprocessing technologies.
- Significant responsibility within a small scientific team.
- Opportunities to grow into a more independent technical role.
- A collaborative and informal working environment.
- A competitive salary based on demonstrated experience.
