ppPhD on System integration of greenhouse horticulture energy hubs – Vacancy number 16644, PhD position, full-time (38 h/week), located in Leiden. Deadline: 25 June 2026. /p pIn collaboration with TU Delft, you will develop and test viable business models that turn greenhouse horticulture into hubs that generate, convert, and store energy, not only for the local greenhouse but for the energy grid as a whole. /p h3What you will do /h3 pIn the Netherlands, greenhouse horticulture plays a key role in the energy system, mainly through combined heat and power. These facilities are fueled by natural gas, while the sector aims to be carbon‑neutral by 2040. By transitioning to system‑positive energy hubs, greenhouse horticulture will shift from a user of energy to one that supports mitigating grid congestion. In this position you will help upscale the models and tools aimed at technically designing and optimising such hubs to full implementation by the sector. /p ul liIdentify viable business models that leverage the system‑positive operation of various hub archetypes. /li liQuantify additional technical, governance, and social barriers to successful adoption of system‑positive energy hubs. /li liDevelop and test ways to optimise the feasibility and scale‑up of hub archetypes for large‑scale implementation. /li liQuantify synergies with neighbouring hubs or regional infrastructure that may strengthen business cases and mitigate barriers. /li /ul h3Where you will work /h3 pLeiden University’s Institute of Environmental Science (CML) is part of the Faculty of Sciences. It offers a vibrant, collaborative community of scientists working on sustainability and the sustainable use of natural resources. CML collaborates with TU Delft, Erasmus University and the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre. /p h3What you bring /h3 ul liProven scientific interest in energy transitions. /li liProficiency in modelling in Python (or similar). /li liExperience with modelling complex systems and associated datasets. /li liA MSc degree, including a MSc thesis, relevant to the topic. /li liEvidence of analytical thinking and scientific writing. /li liInterest in interdisciplinary science, particularly integrating governance and social sciences and participatory approaches. /li /ul h3What we offer /h3 pWe offer an initial one‑year contract with an option to extend for up to four years based on performance, following pay scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Salary ranges from € 3 059 to € 3 881 gross per month for a full‑time position. /p pWith a full‑time position (38 h/week), you are entitled to b232 vacation hours per year /b, equivalent to b30.5 vacation days /b (based on a 38‑hour work week).
