We aim to appoint an Assistant Professor with research and teaching expertise in War Studies or Strategic studies with demonstrable interest in contemporary war and warfare.
What you will do
The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) aims to appoint an Assistant Professor with specialisation in contemporary war and warfare, focused on security and defence policy challenges facing Western societies. We especially welcome candidates with demonstrable interests in, and knowledge of, topics that intersect war studies and adjacent fields like civil defense, crisis management, policing, intelligence studies and security studies more broadly.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable research records in themes related to the vacancy and strong teaching background in war and/ or strategic studies, or a related field, as well as in topics related to the Institute’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programme offerings. The candidate will be expected to teach across several programmes in the Institute, notably the master’s programme Crisis and Security Management and the bachelor programme Security Studies, and our minor in Global Affairs. The positions are aimed at strengthening the Institute’s teaching, research and grant-acquisition capacities in a phase of growth and exciting interdisciplinary research opportunities.
The successful applicants will be expected to:
Develop and teach courses in war studies;
Conduct independent research on topics related to war studies
Generate high-quality output in both academic and non-academic outlets, with a focus on international, peer-reviewed journals;
Actively contribute to the renewal and ongoing improvement of educational practices at Bachelor’s and Master’s level;
Work within a multidisciplinary team of colleagues and support the development and implementation of the research strategy of the Institute;
Supervision of thesis and capstone projects;
Contribute to the tutorial system of student mentoring and advising;
Take on administrative and coordination tasks within the Institute;
Acquisition and project management of research and training projects of third parties;
Preferably, the candidate demonstrates an ability to teach across a variety of security-related themes and topics so that they can contribute to other teaching programmes at the institute (e.g. crisis governance, intelligence, cybersecurity) beyond our offerings in war studies.
