PCB Layout Engineer
Are you our new colleague? We are looking for an experienced PCB layout engineer, or someone with less experience but strongly motivated to contribute to scientific research. This role is part of the Engineering Group at SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research.
Overview
SRON develops measuring instruments for space missions. The electronics that read out the super‑sensitive detectors often contain mixed‑signal PCBs. Because of the strict space conditions, the design and hardware must meet high requirements whereas we also produce PCBs for extensive testing that are not used in space. These range from small gradient boards to RF up/down‑converters and from rigid to flexible boards.
Your position and team
The vacancy is part of the Engineering Group, together with mechanical designers, instrument makers and the Product Assurance/Quality Assurance/Configuration Control group. A large electronics group—analog and digital designers, system engineers and software engineers—handles layout and construction. The role is based mainly at the Leiden location, with two PCB layout engineers and three assemblers spread across Leiden and Groningen.
Your project
The role is not limited to design. Because of the special demands on PCBs, you will collaborate extensively with designers, physicists and assemblers, focusing on hardware and testing. You will be assigned to a project and involved in the preparation, design phase and, when required, construction and testing. Every project is unique; we manufacture only single units. The layout software is Siemens Xpedition. Library management is part of the role.
Position requirements
- Higher professional education (HBO) level and electronics background.
- Experience in high‑tech / research environments (a plus).
- Affinity for analog circuits, high‑speed signals and dense board design.
- Passion for, and experience with, hardware.
- Examples of PCBs you have designed are welcome.
- If you are less experienced but motivated, we encourage you to apply.
What we offer
Appointment will be in the position of Design Engineer A on a temporary contract under NWO‑I for a minimum of one year, with a prospect of permanent employment. The collective labour agreement for research institutions applies. Salary up to €5 241 gross per month (level 1‑1‑2026). The position is based in Leiden.
Benefits
- End‑of‑year bonus of 8,33 % of the gross yearly salary.
- Holiday allowance of 8 % of the gross yearly salary.
- 42 days of vacation leave per year on a full‑time basis.
- Options for additional personal development.
- Excellent parental leave facilities.
- Ample training opportunities.
- Flexibility of working hours.
